An Armonk family is turning a personal tragedy into promising futures for young musicians.

Shari Applebaum says she started a music event to promote positive change to help people struggling with mental illness and to bring attention to suicide prevention.

Applebaum's son, Miles, suffered from depression and took his own life two years ago, when he was 21. News 12 covered the tragedy, when a park ranger found his body in the Glazier Preserve Park in New Castle.

Music was said to be one of Miles' greatest passions, so his mom decided that creating a musical event was the best way to remember him. Proceeds for the event will go toward scholarships to help provide aspiring musicians an opportunity to study music at Lagond Music School, where Miles studied.

Jesse Andreozzi misses his best friend Miles every day, but says he's encouraged by the benefit as his buddy's love for music lives on.
