Over two dozen state senators sent a letter to the New York Public Service Commission on Monday, urging them to encourage Con Edison to drop late fees for customers this winter.

Sen. Shelley Mayer is among those pushing for this.

Her office says while the cost of natural gas has been fluctuating, Con Ed generated a net income of $1.69 billion from September 2021 to September 2022 and should put "principles over profit."

Con Ed projects its average residential natural gas heating customer will pay 32% more on bills this winter compared to last year. Electric customers in Westchester will pay 27% more.

Since the increase in costs, companies like NYSEG have already announced they're suspending late payment charges for bills between Dec 1 and April 15.
