A string of muggings has shaken up the quiet Woodlawn community.
According to police, a 77-year-old woman was pushed into the street at Oneida Avenue and 236th Street while walking to church Sunday morning. A neighbor who called 911 says she heard screaming and found the woman with blood running down her face. The suspect got away with the woman's purse.
The next day, police say another woman in her 70s was attacked and robbed of her purse one block away from the first incident. In both cases, the women were taken to the hospital with cuts and bruises.
People who live in the area claim there have actually been a total of four people mugged within the past week, all within a few blocks of each other. They're calling for an increased police presence and posted signs warning people about the crimes.
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
