MTA officials say there will be more patrols and surveillance at Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station, and other stations throughout Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road. They say commuters may see extra bag checks but there should not be any significant delays.
Riders say it's not uncommon to see police patrolling the trains especially during rush hour. "I'm glad they beefed up security, they should; and yes, I do feel safe," says Joseph Sampino, of Dobbs Ferry.
"There are at least two [officers] on each train and then they just walk back and forth," adds Kevin Hodio.
The Port Authority has also increased police presence at bridges and tunnels as well as other spots.
Police officials say that security is going to rely heavily on public awareness and the campaign "If you see something, say something."
