Commuters in the Bronx and the rest of the city are getting an early holiday bonus courtesy of the MTA. The MTA has announced it will not be hiking fares for 2007. Money saving service cuts are also off the table for the year. Original plans called for $240 million in fare hikes and $20 million in cutbacks, which would have lengthened the waits for buses and subways during off-peak hours. MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow said the measures won't be needed though, since business is going well. Deficits are projected to start mounting in 2008, but how those are dealt with depends on how talks go once Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) assumes the governor's office. The Straphangers Campaign called the fare hike delay a good start and suggested increasing efficiency to help keep fares down in the future.
