The political mudslinging is heating up in Mount Vernon's mayoral race.
Mayoral hopeful Richard Thomas was in front of Mount Vernon City Hall Tuesday, calling on the state attorney general to remove current Mayor Ernie Davis from office.
Thomas points to a city statute that says any officer must forfeit his office on conviction.
Davis pleaded guilty last fall to federal misdemeanor tax evasion charges, and was sentenced to two years' probation.
Davis says he has no plans to step down.
The state Attorney General's Office had no comment on Thomas' statement.
