The varsity and junior varsity Mount Vernon Knights cheerleading teams will be going to nationals for the first time.
The cheerleaders paid tribute to their late teammate Kayla Green by placing a pink pom-pom on the stage during their big win at regionals. The junior varsity cheer captain was fatally stabbed earlier this year.
Head varsity coach Mekiyah Knox estimates it will cost about $40,000 to $50,000 for flights, hotels, competition fees and more.
Fundraising efforts are underway to help the team get to Florida. A GoFundMe has been set up for those who would like to contribute.
The team has to raise its competition fees by the end of December to be able to go to the nationals in February.
