Jaxson Dart is out for at least the rest of the regular season with a left knee injury, coach John Harbaugh said, leaving the New York Giants without their young franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future in a significant blow to their hopes of being a contender.

“It’s a big loss, for sure," Harbaugh said following practice on Wednesday. "It’s your starting quarterback. It’s a tough loss.”

Dart was injured on the first drive Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams when his left leg bent awkwardly as he was hit by two defenders. The initial hope was a sprained medial collateral ligament and a shorter absence, but an MRI revealed a more extensive injury that will keep him out for an extended period of time.
