Police in Mount Kisco are searching for the armed suspect who attempted to rob a deli, forcing all local schools to go on lockdown Wednesday.
The incident happened at around 10:45 a.m. when Leopoldo Ruballos, who works at Lexington Deli, says a man came in, pointed a gun at him and demanded money. Ruballos says when he refused to hand over the cash, the would-be robber fled the scene.
Chief Steven Anderson, of the Mount Kisco Police Department, says he first learned about the attempted robbery 15 minutes after it happened when a person, possibly a customer at the deli, flagged down a passing patrol car.
"We received information, third hand, that there may have been an attempted robbery," Anderson says. "We had a language barrier from the victim, shaky information from the person reporting it."
As the search for the suspect got under way, administrators at Mount Kisco Elementary School, which is located near Lexington Deli, decided to go on lockdown. Other schools in the district followed suit.
"I wasn't obviously too thrilled with what was going on, but the police are on it," says parent Doug Catalanello.
Police are still unsure about the exact description of the suspect, but they are currently looking for a man who is about 5'8" and weighs 180 pounds. He may have been wearing shorts and a pullover sweatshirt at the time of the attempted robbery.
