Two firefighters were injured battling a blaze that started on the roof of a Chinese restaurant in Mount Vernon Sunday
The fire ignited at the Golden Gate Chinese Restaurant on West Sandford Boulevard around 8:30 a.m. Sunday. After firefighters put out the blaze, they had to return to the scene Sunday afternoon after a hotspot reignited.
Mount Vernon Fire Chief Edward Stevenson says the Golden Gate Chinese restaurant was completely destroyed, along with a fish market and grocery store next door. There was also damage to at least one home nearby.
He says his crew called in extra manpower from Yonkers and Pelham to help douse the flames, which also spread to a house.
The American Red Cross is helping nearly a dozen people who have been displaced by the fire.
No residents were hurt in the fire, but the two firefighters who suffered minor injuries are expected to be OK.
There is no word on the cause of the fire. The restaurant was closed when it started.
