A few homes in Mount Vernon have been flooded with backed-up sewage for weeks despite residents’ attempts to reach out to city officials.
Wayne Fletcher lives in a two-family home with six other people, including two children. He says his family has been forced to live in the unsanitary situation for the past two weeks as the city struggles to fix the problem of backed-up sewage in several homes.
"The major problem is the sewage in the main line here, that's backed up," Fletcher says. "From what I heard, this has been going on for years and years."
Fletcher says he spent more than $50,000 five years ago to have his basement finished, but the recent sewage backups have ruined everything.
"The comptroller did call me Tuesday evening. She didn't say she was gonna fix the problem for me, she's blaming the mayor," he says "I don't want you to tell me about the mayor, I want you guys to do something."
Fletcher says the placement of a pump has been the city's only response so far to the problem. However, he says the pump doesn’t even work on a regular basis.
"This is a health hazard…we're going through coronavirus and this…is causing more trepidation for us," he says.
News 12's calls for a response from the city of Mount Vernon have gone unanswered.
As for his next step, Fletcher says he's looking for a place to stay temporarily, for the safety of his family. Ultimately, he says they may all be forced to pack up and leave.
