Nothing seems to slow down busy New Yorkers along the streets of Manhattan.
Most people are well-aware of landmarks such as Saks Fifth Avenue all aglow with lights and sounds or Rockefeller Center with its magnificent decorations and trees. What people may not know is that the magic of a New York City Christmas actually gets its inspiration miles away in Westchester County.
A 110,000-square foot warehouse in Mount Vernon is where Santa's helpers make Christmas memories. Workers at the American Christmas factory on Warren Place create many of the signature pieces that adorn Rockefeller Plaza.
The world famous heralding angels, 14-foot cadets and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree decorations are just a few iconic items that are created by American Christmas. American Christmas' CEO Fred Schwam took over the family business when he was only 21. "My dad started a company in 1968 that originally offered artificial plants and flowers. He was an artist," says Schwam.
Schwam says he gets a thrill every time he see people's eyes light up at their creations. "This is what it's all about. The magic and the electricity you feel when all the pieces finally come together and here at Radio City Music Hall. It's showtime."
