People gathered in front of Mount Vernon City Hall Saturday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote.

The event was organized by the group Women for Mount Vernon. It gave city residents a look back in time to see how far women in America have come. Many said there is still a long way to go.

Democratic mayoral candidate Shawyn Patterson-Howard said in order to see more change, women have to make their voices heard during local, state and federal elections.

"We have to be unapologetic about our right to vote," says Patterson-Howard. "We fought long and hard to get the right to vote, so we cannot allow situations and circumstances and frustrations and people trying to disenfranchise us, keep us home from the polls."

Speakers informed the crowd that although the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920, it wasn't until decades later that women of color were given that same voice.
