On Monday, officials and community partners in the City of Mount Vernon gathered to discuss plans for moving forward if SNAP benefits do not return on Nov. 1, amidst the government shutdown.
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard advises residents to make a plan now, take inventory on what foods and non-perishables they currently have, and shop smart.
She also discussed the 17 food pantries and soup kitchens open to the community for anyone in need.
The city, alongside its community partners, also has three current food programs including:
Retail Recovery Program with Feeding Westchester: Expanding access to fresh produce, frozen meats, and pantry staples through local retail partnerships.
Stuff-a-Bus Food Drive – Annual citywide effort to collect and distribute food to local pantries and families in need.
Grab & Go! Meal Distribution – Ongoing initiative offering meals and essential items to residents experiencing food insecurity.
On Nov. 3, the city will launch its "Second Chance Foods Program" to provide meals to seniors in partnership with the Westchester County Office of the Aging.
