A Monticello man was arrested for allegedly beating a dog violently and loudly enough for neighbors to hear and call police for help.

Police say they received multiple calls of a dog crying and making sounds of distress last Wednesday on North Street in the Village of Monticello.

When police arrived, they say they found 24-year-old Samuel Stanford, violently slamming a female pit bull against the pavement and stomping the dog with his feet.

Stanford was charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal. He was given an appearance ticket to return to village court June 12.

The dog, Zola, was taken for veterinary care and treated for serious injuries, according to police. She is recovering in a foster home.

A GoFundMe page has been started to help cover her veterinary care and expenses.
