A Montebello homeowner says his family escaped unharmed after a fire heavily damaged their home Sunday night.

News 12 spoke with the homeowner, who said everyone made it out safely.

However, he said the family’s car was destroyed in the flames.

Video from the scene shows extensive damage to the property. The garage appears to have been completely destroyed, while the back of the house sustained significant damage.

The fire prompted the closure of Route 202 between Mayer Drive and West Gate Road as emergency crews responded. The roadway has since reopened.

Officials have not yet released a cause for the fire.
