3ds agoDemocratic Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has won the nomination to seek an unprecedented fourth term.
Spano faced some criticism for seeking another four-year term in office after the City Council voted to extend term limits a second time.
When News 12 asked Spano about the issue, he said voters would have a chance to weigh in – and the voters stated they wanted him to run for mayor once again.
Spano walked into music from Yonkers' own DMX on Tuesday night as the crowd chanted "Four more years.”
Spano faced off with two candidates in the Democratic primary who both said he should have stepped aside and allowed new leadership in the city.
Longtime Councilwoman Corazon Pineda-Isaac and Yonkers teacher Margaret Fountain Coleman both said they didn’t feel the mayor did enough to address issues like affordable housing, education and public safety.
But on Tuesday, Spano pointed to all the three issues and said his record speaks for itself.
He said he wants to continue bringing in businesses like Lionsgate and MGM, and he will also focus on improving educational outcomes.
“The people of our city want to continue the progress they like that we are safe that we are going to continue to drive and make Yonkers even better," he said.
Spano will now face Republican Councilman Anthony Merante in the general election in November.
