Massive gas outage continues at Palisade Towers in Yonkers, city leaders discuss what's next

There's new details on a major outage that has left hundreds of people in Yonkers without gas.

It's going on seven days since the nearly 400 people living at the Palisade Towers have been able to use their stoves. Now, the city and housing authority have a clearer picture of what they're working with when it comes to repairs.

The outage was sparked by a series of leaks in the main gas line, according to authorities.

Initially, people living in all the buildings inside the community didn't have hot water but temporary boilers have since been put up to help with that.

As for what's next, city leaders tell News 12 they are looking into three options.

One of those is shifting the utilities from gas to electric. Another option is keeping the gas and repairing the damaged line. The third choice is doing a hybrid situation and using both gas and electric at some capacity.

Regardless of what path is taken, leaders with the housing authority warn it could take a while.

"I would hate to mislead people and have them think it's going to be fixed in the near-term. I think the best case scenario is several months," says Wilson Kimball with the Municipal Housing Authority – City of Yonkers.

Kimball says the city plans to expedite the work to get things fixed as quickly as they can.

In the meantime, food drop-offs and donations continue daily from various different businesses in the area. The next one is slated for Thursday. Additionally, hotplates and microwaves have been given to the residents.
