New York state Health
Commissioner Mary Bassett has announced she will resign at the end of the year.
"I am leaving now
so the next commissioner can have the chance to lead this great department for
a full four-year term under the leadership of Gov. Hochul," Bassett wrote
in a statement.
Bassett, also a former
New York City health commissioner, says she'll return to Harvard T.H. Chan
School of Public Health.
Under
her tenure as state health commissioner in the last year, she's dealt with a
COVID resurgence as well as polio and monkeypox outbreaks.
Hochul
says she is “deeply grateful” to her.
"She has worked
tirelessly to keep New Yorkers informed, healthy and safe," said Hochul in
a statement.
Bassett
will step down on Jan. 1, 2023.
