yesterdayYonkers police are collaborating with the NYPD in a manhunt for a suspect in a wrong-way, head-on collision on I-87 Wednesday night.
Police say it all started with units investigating a larceny in Mount Vernon around 10 p.m. A short time later, officers located the male suspect in a Jeep Cherokee with Connecticut license plates at the Cross County Shopping Center. That's when they say the suspect fled in his car, leading police units on a very brief chase.
Investigators inform News 12 that the suspect entered the northbound lanes of I-87 driving in the wrong direction—southbound toward the Bronx.
Police promptly ceased the pursuit, alerted the NYPD and began driving along the southbound side of the Thruway.
Police crossed into the Bronx and encountered a two-car collision involving a Honda Accord and the vehicle the suspect was driving.
The suspect fled on foot from the accident scene into Van Cortlandt Park. Police helicopters were deployed in an attempt to locate the man, but he managed to evade capture.
The NYPD says a man and a woman from the Bronx were in the Honda Accord involved in the crash. The couple was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. They are in stable condition.
The search for the suspect is ongoing. Yonkers police say they have identified the suspect but are not releasing his name at this time.
