Less than a month after being released from prison, a man who served nearly 40 years for killing a Pearl River girl is back behind bars.

Richard LaBarbera allegedly violated the conditions of his parole and is being held at the Erie County Jail.

LaBarbera was released from Sing Sing Prison on July 8., and as a condition of his parole, he was sent to Erie County.

His release sparked outrage from Pearl River residents who launched an effort to keep the convicted killer behind bars for life.
LaBarbera and Robert McCain were both convicted back in the 1980s of brutally murdering 16-year-old Paula Bohovesky as she walked home from her job at the Pearl River Library.

John Murphy, whose daughter was friends with Bohovesky, has been fighting for years to make sure the two men were kept in prison.

"We believe it was a heinous crime committed by a thoroughly worthless, moral-less, dangerous criminal and he just doesn't belong in the general population," Murphy says.

McCain was denied his parole last month. It was not immediately clear which parole conditions LaBarbera violated. Officials tell News 12 he is scheduled for a hearing to address his violations.

Both LaBarbera and McCain were sentenced to 25 years to life for the murder.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day released a statement thanking the parole officers and condemning the state Parole Board for releasing him. It says in part: "Not surprisingly, it only took him days to run afoul of the law. I remind all that this cretin was on parole when he murdered Paula so he clearly has learned nothing other than how to be a scar on society. He committed murder, a crime of permanency, and should be permanently in jail."
