A man is dead after being shot by police in Mott Haven on Thursday morning.
Police say they arrived at 105 Willis Ave. around 6:45 a.m. to look for 44-year-old Lucien Colon. Police say he's a known sex offender in New York State and has active bench and parole warrants.
When officers got to the apartment door, Colon's girlfriend opened the door and gave officers permission to enter. Police say they entered the bedroom and found Colon with a gun in his hand.
Police asked him to show them his hands and he responded that he had a gun. Officers repeatedly asked him to step out of the room and he responded by saying, "It's not going to happen."
Officers interacted with Colon for a minute and a half as they tried to de-escalate the situation. They gave him multiple commands to drop the weapon.
One of the officers fired a shot and struck Colon in the face. EMS took him to NYC Health+Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was pronounced dead. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
Some officers were also taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
Colon was on parole for a 2013 murder and was released in 2023. He was also found guilty of rape in 1997 and attempted murder in 1995.
Colon’s girlfriend spoke with News 12. She says he was a good guy with a good heart. He was just about to get tested to see if he was a match, so he could donate a kidney to her.
