The arraignment of a Yonkers man arrested after a confrontation with police was postponed Tuesday, sparking accusations of legal corruption.
Eric Brown, 28, was arrested Friday on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Police say Brown became combative when they issued him a ticket for not cleaning up after his dog. Brown?s supporters claim he is not being represented fairly in court because the arrest was caught on camera. Witnesses say Brown was thrown to the ground and beat up by police. His wife, Monique Vasquez, says the cops were yelling out racist remarks.
Brown was ordered back to jail without bail Tuesday because he didn?t have an attorney and there was no legal aid present to represent him. The judge?s move infuriated Brown?s supporters, including Yonkers NAACP President Karen Edmondson. She says legal aid attorneys were probably coerced into not representing Brown. Family members say they were shocked at how badly beaten Brown looked in court.
Brown?s arrest came on the heels of the U.S. Department of Justice?s announcement of an investigation into the Yonkers Police Department. The probe came about after accusations of excessive police force and discriminatory policing in the department.
Community activists say they will rally Wednesday when Brown is scheduled to appear back in court.
