YONKERS - A Yonkers man accused of illegally hanging about two dozen dead cats from trees faced a judge today.
Rene Carcamo, 60, was arrested last week on charges he illegally disposed of 25 dead animals. The cats were discovered in April hanging from trees on Overlook Terrace in Yonkers. Authorities say Carcamo lives right across the street from where the carcasses were found.
Carcamo isn't accused of abusing the cats, but he faces environmental charges. However, he is charged with two unrelated counts of animal cruelty for not properly caring for two kittens. The court also ordered Carcamo to submit to a drug and mental health test.
Tuesday's hearing was a small step for animal supporters who are eager to get more answers. "I'm waiting to see the outcome and I'm hoping we have the man that committed this heinous crime," says Adrienne Hernandez, of the Cat Council.
Carcamo is due back in court for another hearing on Jan. 22.
