A father and his 13-year-old child were rescued by DEC forest rangers after they got lost on a hike at a campground in Franklin County, according to state officials.
The Department of Environmental Conservation released the information last Wednesday. They said that Fish Creek Campground caretakers in the Town of Santa Clara called for help with a wilderness search on Aug. 27 at 9:50 p.m. after the two campers, who were not equipped with headlamps, food or water, failed to return.
Authorities said that during the search, a campground employee flagged rangers to report hearing voices on the other side of Whey Pond.
The DEC says the 32-year-old man and his 13-year-old daughter were located and that the teen was found up in a tree. Authorities said the father thought his child would be safer that way, after realizing they would not be able to return on their own past dark.
Authorities say rescuers walked the family back to the campground, where they safely arrived at 1:15 a.m.
