The Yonkers-based AFYA Foundation sent supplies for thousands of Puerto Ricans dealing with the aftermath of several earthquakes.

"These earthquakes are far harder to live with than Hurricane Maria," says founder Danielle Butin. “People are absolutely terrorized and living with trauma. Nothing is predictable, nothing can be counted on."      

Butin recently returned from the southern part of Puerto Rico, which is still experiencing untimely earthquakes.

She delivered supplies to civilians, including some elderly people who are now living outdoors. Many people are attempting to avoid the danger of concrete homes collapsing.

“People are so scared, rightfully, of being inside. Structures are unstable so now people are finding transient housing outside,” recalled Butin.

She told News 12 the trip reaffirmed her organizations’ commitment to sending medical supplies to those who are in desperate need. Butin also shared that they’ve already sent several shipments since the ground began shaking.

“Within the next few days, we're going to have a 40-foot sea freight container on the way," she says.

If you plan on planning to Puerto Rico soon, AFYA Foundation is asking travelers to visit their Yonkers warehouse and pick up a duffel bag filled with medical supplies. When passengers reach Puerto Rico, a volunteer will pick it up.
