County Executive Day says large DPW and Highway department trucks are used to block off streets and there are drones to scan from above. New this year is a "real time crime center" that monitors any threatening chatter on the dark web.

News 12 asked officials in Rockland and Yonkers about the safety measures in place for large public events in our area following the deadly terror attack in New Orleans that killed 14 people and injured dozens more.

"The good news is many of the things that we do right now have been done for some time and are designed to actually stop some of the things we saw," said Rockland County Executive Ed Day.

Rockland is home to the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Pearl River, which is said to be one of the largest outside of New York City. There are other large gatherings in the county throughout the year.

County Executive Day says large DPW and Highway department trucks are used to block off streets and there are drones to scan from above. New this year is a "real time crime center" that monitors any threatening chatter on the dark web.

County Executive Day said, "nobody can ever stop everything but as far as preparedness here in Rockland County, we are well prepared to address whatever will be thrown at us."

"Anything that has a tremendous amount of people at it, you have to be conscious and prepared," said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. He leads one of the largest cities in New York.

Every year thousands attend Yonkers RiverFest and St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Mayor Spano says sanitation trucks are used to block streets and there's more law enforcement present.

Mayor Spano said, "we've been good and lucky and we want to stay that way. We will continue to work hard to keep our community safe."

Rockland County Executive Day says there is no indication of any immediate threat or risk to the community at this time.
