An LGBT veteran is working to save hundreds of files and photos that depicted what it was like to be gay in the military.

Donald MacIver joined the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Veterans of Greater New York while serving our country for a decade. Now as the only member, he is working to save hundreds of pictures, files and newspaper clippings.

The files tell the stories of LGBT members in the military, including one who was decorated for killing a man but "discharged for loving another."

The files, which were once kept in the mayor's office, have been packed into a storage facility since January. MacIver's mission is to secure another grant from The History Channel to archive the files and get them housed and on exhibit.

MacIver's efforts were even recognized by Rep. Charles Rangel, saying the LGBT members must receive the dignity they deserve.

MacIver's goal is to secure funding and have the materials archived by next summer.
