Residents living in a Mount Vernon apartment complex say their building's management is ignoring their broken elevator.
Phyllis Small, who lives on the seventh floor of Levister Towers on South Seventh Avenue, says she feels trapped inside her own home.
"It's very frustrating because when you speak to the management they will tell you they're working on it. And I've been here one year now and I'm handicapped." Small suffers from bad knees and a heart condition.
Tenants, many of whom are elderly and wheelchair-bound, say the elevators have been a problem for years, but it started to get much worse about two months ago. They say a repair crew constantly comes to fix the issue, but the problem persists.
A spokesperson for the management company says they are aware of the problem and are not neglecting it.
The spokesperson adds that sometimes the elevators break down because tenants vandalize them.
