Westchester legislators want assurances from County Executive Andy Spano that an estimated outlay of $51.6 million for minority housing in predominately white communities won't skyrocket if the plan is implemented.
The county's settlement with the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development calls for 750 units of affordable housing to be built. Legislators are concerned the county will ultimately be required to construct all the units with a price tag in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
The county board has to approve the housing proposal by Sept. 24.
