Lawyers for a woman who stabbed her ex-fiancé's new girlfriend are seeking leniency through New York's Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act.
News 12 was in court Friday afternoon as Dr. Alika Crew was sentenced to one year in Westchester County Jail.
This outcome was pretty much expected and had been discussed by both the prosecution and defense prior to Friday - and the judge did decide to go with their suggestion.
Crew was charged with stabbing her ex-fiance's girlfriend with a razor blade in an incident that happened back in July 2020 in New Rochelle.
Crew pleaded guilty to felony assault.

First-degree assault would normally carry a five-year minimum, but Crew's lawyers used New York's Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act to get that sentence lowered. It's being called the first time this has been used during an actual sentencing and not post-sentencing.
Passed in 2019, the act permits sentencing leniency for domestic violence survivors.
As part of this, Crew's lawyers had to show abuse at the hands of her ex and also show that abuse was a significant factor in the attack on his current girlfriend.
A victim statement was read aloud today that read: "My attack will always be with me and always haunt me, I don't know if I'll ever be OK. I will never be OK with leniency being given to my attacker."
"I would just like to say that I am sorry, I am sorry for any pain that I have caused, I am sorry for any pain I have caused my community," say Crew.
Crew is an Ivy League-educated orthodontist.
She was remanded immediately following sentencing.
