Two Hudson Valley lawmakers on opposite sides of the political aisle are joining forces to get rid of abandoned homes in their district.
State Sens. Terrence Murphy and Jeff Klein say Putnam and Dutchess counties have seen over $6 million in property value depreciation resulting from poorly maintained bank-owned foreclosed homes, otherwise called zombie homes.
On Monday, the lawmakers unveiled new multiparty legislation, which includes starting a state registry to force banks to maintain their properties.
Officials say studies show homes within a 300-foot radius of a bank-owned or zombie property depreciate by an average of $5,000.
