There's a new push by federal lawmakers to bolster schools serving low-income and underserved students and families.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Mondaire Jones stood outside Spring Valley High School, proposing the full-service Community School Expansion Act of 2021.
Going beyond education, full-service community schools serve students' mental, physical and emotional needs, and even offer services for their parents as well.
“The COVID-19 crisis has laid bare the inequities in our system and deepened educational attainment gaps…community schools are one of the most effective tools we have to close those gaps… and to ensure students and families and entire communities have the support that they urgently need," said Jones.
The bill would invest $3.5 billion over the next five years to expand and grow those schools serving low-income and underserved communities.
