Lawmakers are pushing for changes after a passing freight train allegedly sparked brush fires in Rockland County.
State Sen. Bill Weber (R-38) introduced a bill that would change penalties for individuals and companies that violate rules and regulations related to braking systems, steering components, and the transportation of hazardous material.
Weber is also calling on the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to launch an independent investigation into the involvement of CSX.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D), and Rep. Mike Lawler (R-17) are making the same request. In a letter to the FRA, they say they are concerned the freight train's wheels ignited the brush and caused a major disruption.
The senators and congressman are calling for railroad officials to investigate what caused the 70-acre fire that resulted in millions of dollars in damages.
