Lawmakers are working to fight scams against immigrants in New York.

The New York State Office for New Americans says con artists often prey on immigrants, falsely promising things like citizenship and benefits. The victims not only lose thousands of dollars, but could also be at risk for deportation.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo made immigration assistance fraud a felony earlier this year. A New American hotline has been set up, where people can call to report fraud and get service referrals.

Information campaigns are also being run around the state to educate and offer free resources. Multilingual ads have been put up around the state to warn immigrants about fraud.
