Officials in Mamaroneck passed a law Monday night ensuring that dogs from puppy mills do not get sold at village pet stores.
Attorney Susan Chana Lask says the law would allow pet stores to sell animals from shelters and not puppy mills, a protection of the animal and the consumer.
"They have congenital diseases, like their hips are displaced," she says. "They have coughs, they die within weeks of being purchased. It's a horrific event for the consumers to fall in love with a companion animal and for weeks or months have to suffer with that with the animal."
The law comes after a number of complaints were filed against a pet store on Mamaroneck Avenue.
