Expressions of respect and mourning poured in at the Rockland County Courthouse after the death of iconic U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away Friday following a long battle with cancer.

She was known for her progressive votes on divisive social issues like abortion rights, same sex marriage and affirmative action.

Mourners are leaving cards and flowers at a makeshift memorial in her honor. Organizers say it's no accident that the courthouse, a symbol of justice, was chosen for the makeshift memorial.

"We wanted something for the whole community because everyone is shocked," says Steve Gold, who organized the gathering. "I've looked at when anybody else died [and] I've never seen the outpouring like this, not only from the county, but from the entire world for what kind of loss it is, and people are concerned about what's going to happen in the future with the election coming up."

The memorial to Ginsburg will remain in place until Sunday at 6 p.m.
