A landscaper who severed a dog's leg after running it over with a riding mower in Goshen was sentenced Tuesday to three years' probation.
Jay Testa pleaded guilty in Goshen Town Court in May to one count of animal cruelty.
The dog's owners, Brian Shade and Victoria Brancoveanu, protested outside the courthouse in the hope that the judge would impose prison time. They claim Testa not only ran over their dog Daisy, but also left her to die. Daisy had to have her left front leg amputated as a result of the incident.
Tasta's attorney said in court that he didn't mean to hurt Daisy and that he made a bad judgment call by not getting help. While the now-unemployed landscaper didn't want to talk on camera, he did apologize to the family in court, saying he's sorry for the "terrible mistake."
