More than a dozen police agencies in the Hudson Valley took part Thursday in ongoing training by the U.S. Police Canine Association.
The event was hosted by the Ramapo Police Department at Provident Bank Park in Pomona.
The training was divided into two categories: drugs and explosives.
The explosives exercises were held outside and included teams from the NYPD and MTA, as well as other agencies.
It takes about a year of training before the dogs and officers can go out on the street.
Police canines generally work until they are about 7 or 8 years old, when age begins to catch up with them. Many of them then retire as family pets with their handlers.
