African-American pride was on full display in Yonkers over the weekend.

People lined the streets for the city's annual ‘Juneteenth Celebration,’ an event featuring music, fashion and African dance.

Organizers say the parade emphasizes freedom and the importance of education and achievement within the African-American community. "They need to know their heritage, they need to appreciate that they have blessing to be born in this country - to be able to do a lot of things that other children are not able to do," says Secretary of the Yonkers African-American Heritage Committee Athena Dent.

Dating back to 1865, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.
