Park Slope 5th graders write book to help wildlife in AfricaYou're never too young to make a difference, and a group of fifth graders in Park Slope is doing just that with a brand-new book. For 11-year-old Isobel Levenson, she says she knows a thing or two about conserving wildlife. “We need to protect the wildlife right now more than ever, with all these poachers out there killing these poor animals that just want to eat food and live their lives,” says Levenson.
"I never seen a storm like this." Thunderstorms knock out power across Hudson ValleyDozens of customers were left without power as powerful thunderstorms crossed the Hudson Valley this weekend.In Hartsdale, a tree to come crashing down onto Secor Road, blocking one lane of traffic. The tree has since been removed. A tree and some power lines also came down during the storm at the corner of Eastway and Northway.
East Brunswick police: Mother, grandfather were trying to rescue 8-year-old girl in pool; all drownedPolice in East Brunswick say a mother and grandfather who drowned in their backyard pool a week ago were trying to rescue an 8-year-old girl who had fallen in. According to police, Bharat Patel, 62, his 33-year-old daughter-in-law Nisha Patel and her 8-year-old daughter were found unresponsive on the afternoon of June 22 in the above-ground pool by police responding to a 911 call from neighbors who heard screams.
Police: Lindenhurst man killed in Great South Bay boat crash:  Police say one person died in a boat crash in the Great South Bay, south of Babylon. Police say just before 3 p.m. Sunday, David Nostrand, of Farmingdale, was operating a 17-foot Boston Whaler in West Fox Creek Channel. That's when his boat hit another boat, a 22-foot Activator, heading north. Police say that boat was being operated by 19-year-old Ian Morgan, of Lindenhurst.
State police to patrol streets of Bridgeport today amid uptick in violenceConnecticut State Police Monday will begin patrolling the streets of Bridgeport amid a recent wave of fatal shootings. Troopers from the Troop G barracks in Bridgeport say they'll patrol the streets with Bridgeport officers seven days a week or until further notice. Three people were killed in separate shootings last week.
