Suffolk County officials are asking for help finding a stolen statue of baby Jesus.
The statue was taken earlier this week from a holiday nativity display on the lawn of the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge.
The display is donated each year by St. Michael the Archangel Chapel in Farmingville.
Police have been searching the area since the crime was discovered Thursday. They even brought in K-9s to help find the statue.
“It almost seems, in a way, that the theft is trivial in nature, but it is an affront to Christianity,” Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said. “As a result of that, it certainly means something to us.”
Police hope that this was a prank, but they can’t rule out the possibility that it could be a hate crime.
“There is one thing that we want to emphasize to all the residents of Suffolk County,” Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said. “We are a county that emphasizes tolerance and acceptance of all religions.”
Anyone who knows what happened to the statue is urged to call police.
