A 14-year-old girl drowned in Lake Mahopac Friday afternoon.
The girl was identified as Jenna Nolan, an eighth-grader and star athlete at Mahopac Middle School.
Police say the incident occurred off of Tamerack Road shortly after 1 p.m. They say a call came in that a young female swimmer disappeared from the community dock off the western side of Mahopac Point.
Five teams were called in to search underwater for Nolan. She was eventually pulled out of the lake unresponsive, and later died after being taken to the hospital.
It took just hours for friends to gather at the entrance to her community and build a memorial for her family.
Investigators are still looking into how the incident happened. Nolan's school had grief counselors on hand for most of Friday evening.
