Sounds of shovels and brooms filled the halls of a Castle Hill NYCHA building on Sunday, after several floors were flooded with water.
A broken water line caused flooding in several floors of the building at 535 Havemeyer Ave. Some tenants say there were not given any help until it was too late.
"It was terrible. The water was gushing out. There was nothing that we could do to stop it," said tenant Johnniea Harrison.
The 33-year-old noticed a water leak in her bathroom around 1 p.m. The drops of water quickly turned into buckets of boiling hot water and filled up her apartment with water that spilled into the halls.
"It started to get extremely hot in the apartment and then the water started to seep from behind the toilet and then out of the wall," Harrison said.
She told News 12 she called 311 twice about the issue before someone came to check the building and said there was no issue. When she tried the fire department, they did not offer her or her neighbors any help.
"They eventually told us, 'stop calling. We've already been out there. There's nothing we can do. This is a NYCHA problem,'" she said.
NYCHA shared in a statement to News 12, "NYCHA plumbers are on site responding to a broken water line at 535 Havemeyer Avenue and maintenance staff are removing water from the affected areas. Residents in need of assistance are encouraged to call the Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771 or submit work tickets through the MyNYCHA application.”
