As summer approaches, Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter is deploying a specialized group of officers known as the Community Action Team, or CAT.
"The CAT Team is not focused on calls for service. They're able to be proactive and aggressive and go into areas where we see upticks in crimes, where we see quality-of-life issues occur," Porter said.
"Quality of life crimes can range from noise complaints to speeding to vagrancy - or people hanging out on corners. The CAT Team is very effective at taking guns off the street, motor vehicle enforcement, and just being a visible presence in neighborhoods where we see upticks in crimes," Porter said.
Porter said the CAT Team is made up of about a dozen officers.
"They're up from having to respond to calls to service, thereby allowing them to be more proactive," Porter said.
"The CAT Team will be a vital part of our policing strategy this summer," he said.
