On this week's Road Trip: Close to Home, we're kicking off strawberry season at Lawrence Farms Orchards in Newburgh!
This family run farm is the definition of family friendly and was built from scratch. "We have a couple different fields people are able to pick from," says farm co-owner Kevin Lawrence.
With 70 open acres to explore, you pay by the pound - and it's anything but slim pickins here. "If it's nice and red, it's going to be the sweetest," says Lawrence. So you can enjoy the fruits of your labor or just buy fresh produce from their farm stand. "A store-bought strawberry just doesn't have that flavor as a fresh-picked strawberry."
But if you have a sweeter tooth, their apple cider doughnuts are to die for or their famous frozen apple cider!
There’s also an entire pint-sized town where you can check out the church, post office, or ice cream parlor. “We also have a small play village that kids just love to run around in. They'll spend all day there just getting tired," says market manager Jen Lawrence. “We started our little village with a house, I made this for my son when he was my grandson's age," adds co-owner Rick Lawrence.
There are also plenty of animals to see like horses, chickens, turkeys - and maybe the peacock will even show off for you. "We've been doing it long enough that kids are bringing their own kids now," says Rick.
