Community leaders and several city officials announced their support for Israel during a rally on the steps of City Hall after the recent outburst of violence in the Gaza Strip.
The Israel Defense Force says Hamas launched more than 900 rockets at Israeli cities over the past week. In Gaza, more than 170 people have been killed by Israeli airstrikes, including dozens of civilians. Over the weekend, Israel dropped leaflets in northern Gaza warning residents to leave. But Hamas told people to stay put.
After officials and leaders made their announcement this morning, pro-Palestinian groups came to City Hall, chanting "Shame on you, City Council" and "Free, free Palestine."
The City Council officials who were at the rally Monday morning say they will continue to stand by Israel until there is peace.
