Irvington police are warning residents about a new scam.
Scammers are calling people and asking for personal information or money, while impersonating an officer or a representative of the Department of Homeland Security.
Irvington police say the caller ID has been "spoofed" to be the department's number. Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity.
Police say an easy way to detect if you're speaking with a scammer is if they ask for money or personal information. Officers say they will never do that over the phone.
If you get a call like this, hang up and report the incident.
