The Indian Point nuclear facility in Buchanan had a successful test of its emergency sirens this morning.
Plant officials say all 172 sirens sounded about four minutes between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. today. They were heard across Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Orange counties.
Plant officials stress that the sirens were not a signal to evacuate. In an actual emergency, the sirens would sound to alert the public to tune in to a local EAS radio or television station for important information and direction.
The plant generates as much as 30 percent of the electricity used in New York City and Westchester County.
