A hardware store in Yonkers saw a high demand for salt as customers searched for supplies ahead of what is expected to be a major blizzard on Sunday.
Carl Howell, of Long Island, was having a tough time in finding bags of ice melter. He was dragging his shopping cart around from place to place.
"I carried this all the way to ShopRite. They didn't have any. The last couple of bags, they sold this morning. I went to one or two other places. Unlike here, they had signs, but their signs said 'no salt,'" Howell said.
Yonkers Paint & Hardware store manager Enny Santos blames issues with distributors for his store's shortage of salt. A sign on the window read "we have salt" but the business was down to its last few bags as of Saturday afternoon.
"That's really what's been moving in the last two days, a lot of salt. In the last 24 hours, about 20-plus bags, 50-pound bags at that of salt," Santos said.
Santos said prices for the 50-pound bags has also increased, which has led to some customers deciding to search elsewhere for a better deal.
"Cost prices have been skyrocketing, which is really holding us up from getting the quantities that we would like to have. It's hurting the businesses and the customers because they're not able to grab as much salt as they would like," he added.
